Dutch Biophysics 2016

Dutch Biophysics 2016, on October 3rd and 4th in de Koningshof Veldhoven, was a great success. At this conference, co-organized by FOM, ALW, the Netherlands Society for Microscopy and the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (BIOPM), about 500 biophysicists, biologists and biomedical engineers gathered and discussed their latest research, in plenary lectures and parallel sessions.

BIOPM sponsored two key prizes: the poster prize and the annual thesis prize.

The Thesis Prize for the best PhD thesis in Biophysics or Biomedical Engineering 2016 was awarded to Gerrit Sitters, for his thesis "Probing the Blueprint of Life: the development and application of novel single-molecule methods". Gerrits successfully defended his thesis at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, December 3rd 2015.

The Poster Prizesfor the best posters at the conference were awarded to:

  1. Agustin Enciso Martinez (Twente University)
  2. Steven Beekmans (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)
  3. Pascal de Boer (UMCG)
By a jury consisting of Wouter Roos (chair, RUG), Marloes Groot (VU) and Peter Zijlstra (TUe).
Congratulations to the prize winners!

Travel grants

PhD students and postdoc researchers can apply for a travel grant. The grant, typically €500, is to be used for visiting research labs abroad. The conditions to receive a travel grant are:

  • membership of BioPM
  • the lab visit is for at least 5 days

The application letter should include a motivation and a recommendation by a supervisor. The application should be mailed to our secretary: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The board of BioPM will decide typically within 2 weeks.

The society would appreciate if the applicant writes a short report of the lab visit to be shared with members on the BioPM website, and acknowledge the BioPM in reports related to the lab visit.

The jury will be appointed by the board of the Society.

Time schedule

Candidates must submit their thesis before July 1, 2015. The winner will be notified on September 7th, 2015. The award ceremony takes place at the Dutch Biophysics conference, Veldhoven, NL, on September 28th, 2015, during the evening program.

BIOPM joins DutchBiophysics meeting 2015

Monday 28 September 2015, De Koningshof, Veldhoven.

The board of the Society for Biophyiscs and Biomedical Technology (BIOPM) has decided to join DutchBiophysics, the very successful annual meeting on molecular and cellular biophysics, microscopy and, new from this year, biomedical engineering. The meeting consists of plenary sessions, with invited presentations by (inter)national speakers, and specialized, parallel oral and poster sessions. The total meeting will last for two days, Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September. Two dedicated biomedical engineering sessions will take place on Monday.

At this meeting, BIOPM will award the biannual PhD thesis prize and poster prizes. For BIOPM and its members DutchBiophysics will replace the Day of Biophysics and Biomedical Technology.

In April, further details about the program and a call for abstracts will be announced and the registration site will open. Further information will appear on this site.
