DutchBiophysics with joined BIOPM meeting 2022

Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 October 2022

The next annual two-day conference of DutchBioPhysics takes place on

Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 October 2022.

DutchBiophysics is organised and sponsored by NWO Domain Science (ENW), in co-operation with the Netherlands Society for Microscopy, the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Technology, and the Dutch Society of Cell Biology.

Abstract submission and selection

The deadlines for the submission of abstracts wil be announced on the home page.

DutchBiophysics with joined BIOPM meeting 2021

DutchBiophysics with joined BIOPM meeting 2021

Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 October 2021

Would you like to contribute to DutchBiophysics 2021? You can do so by giving an oral or poster presentation about your research progress. The call for abstracts is now open, do not hesitate to submit your abstract!

Deadlines for submitting abstracts

  • Oral presentation abstract: Tuesday 1 June 2021, 14.00 hours CE(S)T

Abstract submission and selection

You can submit your abstract for a poster or oral presentation via the website (heading Abstracts). Subsequently, the Scientific Programme Committee selects the abstracts. In August, the selected authors will receive an invitation. If your abstract is not selected for an oral presentation, we will invite you for a poster presentation. The three best posters will be awarded a poster prize sponsored by the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Technology.

Please note that you have to register for the congress independently from your abstract submission. Registration for DutchBiophysics opens in June and will close 7 September 2021, 14.00 hours CE(S)T.

About DutchBiophysics

DutchBiophysics takes place on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 October 2021 and is organised and sponsored by NWO Domain Science (ENW) in co-operation with the Netherlands Society for Microscopy, the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Technology, and the Dutch Society of Cell Biology.

We aim to gather Dutch researchers working in the biophysics field. To do so in times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the format of the conference might change in line with measures taken by the government in the coming months. Whether it will be digital or live, the organisation will do its utmost to present to you an exciting programme with plenary sessions with invited presentations by (inter)national speakers, poster sessions and parallel sessions with oral presentations.

So, mark 11 and 12 October 2021 in your calendar and visit DutchBioPhysics website for more information and to submit your abstract.

Thesis award 2022

Thesis award of the Netherlands' Society for

Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering

The thesis award is granted each year for the best PhD thesis in the area of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering.

The award consists of a certificate and a prize of €2022 to be spent at the laureate's wish.

The research will be judged on the basis of:

  • New insights obtained by this work
  • Scientific quality
  • Presentation
  • Accessibility for non-specialists

Candidates have obtained their PhD degree at a Dutch university, on research in the area of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering. The PhD ceremony must be between August 1, 2021, and August 1, 2022. The candidate, or his (co)–promotor, must be a member of the Society. The candidate is willing to present his/her work at the Dutch Biophysics on October 10 and 11, 2022. See the conference website for an impression:

A submission consists of a link to a pdf version of the thesis, to be sent by e-mail to:      This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

In addition, the candidate must submit a motivation letter of at most 1 A4, describing why his/her work is important, and why it deserves this award. The list of candidates will not be made public.

The jury will be appointed by the board of the Society.

Time schedule

Candidates must submit their thesis before July 11, 2022. The winner will be notified before September 5th, 2022.

The award ceremony is planned to take place at the Dutch Biophysics conference, Veldhoven, NL, on Monday October 10th, 2022.

Dutch Biophysics 2016

Dutch Biophysics 2016, on October 3rd and 4th in de Koningshof Veldhoven, was a great success. At this conference, co-organized by FOM, ALW, the Netherlands Society for Microscopy and the Society for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (BIOPM), about 500 biophysicists, biologists and biomedical engineers gathered and discussed their latest research, in plenary lectures and parallel sessions.

BIOPM sponsored two key prizes: the poster prize and the annual thesis prize.

The Thesis Prize for the best PhD thesis in Biophysics or Biomedical Engineering 2016 was awarded to Gerrit Sitters, for his thesis "Probing the Blueprint of Life: the development and application of novel single-molecule methods". Gerrits successfully defended his thesis at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, December 3rd 2015.

The Poster Prizesfor the best posters at the conference were awarded to:

  1. Agustin Enciso Martinez (Twente University)
  2. Steven Beekmans (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)
  3. Pascal de Boer (UMCG)
By a jury consisting of Wouter Roos (chair, RUG), Marloes Groot (VU) and Peter Zijlstra (TUe).
Congratulations to the prize winners!

Travel grants

PhD students and postdoc researchers can apply for a travel grant. The grant, typically €500, is to be used for visiting research labs abroad. The conditions to receive a travel grant are:

  • membership of BioPM
  • the lab visit is for at least 5 days

The application letter should include a motivation and a recommendation by a supervisor. The application should be mailed to our secretary: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The board of BioPM will decide typically within 2 weeks.

The society would appreciate if the applicant writes a short report of the lab visit to be shared with members on the BioPM website, and acknowledge the BioPM in reports related to the lab visit.
